Open to all Squirrels, Beavers and Cubs in Stroud & Tetbury District
The Activities Team would like to invite you to take part in the Swimmer Stage 1 Activity Badge Assessment being held at Stratford Park Leisure Centre. Young people have the opportunity to attend one of two pool sessions, details below.
- Session 1 – 6.45pm to 8pm
- Session 2 – 7.45pm to 9pm
To take part in either assessment all young people must meet and understand the following requirements.
Requirements: The requirements for this badge are as follows:
- Learn the general safety rules (see below). Find out where it is safe to swim locally.
- Show you know how to prepare for swimming, such as taking part in a warm up
- Make a controlled entry into the water without using the steps. The water must be least 1.5 metres of water.
- Swim ten metres (one width) on your front.
- Tread water for 30 seconds in a vertical position.
- Use a buoyancy aid to float still in the water for 30 seconds
- Show that you’re able to retrieve an object from chest-deep water.
- Perform a push and glide on both your front and back.
- Swim 25 metres (one length) without stopping using any stroke.
- Take part in an organised swimming activity.
If you are in a swimming pool:
- Do not push people into the water.
- Do not swim in the diving area.
- Do not run around the pool as you could slip and hurt yourself or others.
- Never push a person’s head under the water.
- Do not ‘bomb’ anyone.
- Obey the instructions given by the Lifeguard, especially if the whistle is blown.
Generally
- Wait at least one hour after eating food before swimming.
- If you feel tired or cold, get out of the water.
- Never dive into unknown waters.
- Do not swim on your own.
- At the seaside, find out where it is safe to swim.
- Do not use inflatable airbeds in the sea.
*Please note that, due to Leisure Centre rules, Squirrels and Beavers must be accompanied by a leader or a designated adult (who must have a Scouting DBS). Please check with your young person’s Leader before confirming your attendance.
